Opening Doors for Playwrights: The Launch of Writers’ Block
Gingerbread Agency is proud to be handling publicity for Writers’ Block, a new initiative helping emerging playwrights access opportunities in London.
Founded by Sofie Mason and Diana Jervis-Read (in partnership with Omnibus Theatre) Writers’ Block connects playwrights with London homeowners willing to offer spare rooms or properties at reduced rates, helping talented writers access opportunities in the capital without the financial burden of expensive accommodation.
The initiative has already attracted support from some of the UK’s most celebrated playwrights and screenwriters, including Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Jack Thorne, James Graham, Sally Wainwright, Peter Morgan and Martin McDonagh. Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge has donated use of a London flat she bought specifically for writers to use early in their careers, rent free.
Writers’ Block grew out of the Adopt a Playwright Award, founded in 2008, which has supported 55 writers to date, including Ryan Calais Cameron. With 15 homes signed up and 12 writers already housed, the initiative is saving playwrights hundreds to thousands of pounds a year, without the need for new buildings or complex infrastructure. With only 16% of people working in creative industries coming from working-class backgrounds, the scheme aims to break down financial barriers and make opportunities more accessible.
The announcement has generated significant national and industry media attention, with coverage across BBC News, The Independent and The Stage, alongside a feature on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row.
For founders Sofie and Diana, the ultimate ambition is that other theatres and organisations will replicate the model and are offering to share what they have learned with anyone interested in establishing a similar scheme.
“Theatres and arts organisations can replicate the model; people with spare rooms or properties can become hosts; and people in a position to provide financial backing can help the scheme expand.”
With access to the arts remaining a major challenge for emerging talent, Writers’ Block aims to make it easier for playwrights from all backgrounds to develop their careers, build connections and have their work seen.
